Worn Out Places
“I can’t answer that question. I can’t tell him I’ve spent my whole life trying to disappear. I can’t tell him that I was born a drug addict or that I had foster homes so terrible I wished I didn’t exist. And I can’t tell him that last year ended any ambition I had to make it somewhere better in this world.”
Zoie is used to being the new kid and the weird kid and quite frankly the teenaged junkie. She’s grown numb to the stares and the whispers every time she’s sent to a new foster home or a new school district in New York City. She’s got tough skin and she knows how to use it.
But she isn’t used to Northern Michigan, guardians that want her to succeed, and sobriety.
Everything changed on Christmas morning last year. Her social workers call it a tragedy and her weekly Narcotics Anonymous meeting wants her to open up. All Zoie wants is to be left alone to get high. When the local golden boy takes an interest in her, he’s determined to help her stay on the right path.
But in a world where Zoie has never felt safe, she only knows one comfort. With so many secrets to hold, overwhelming guilt, and a fragile grip on sobriety, Zoie is brought to the root of her life as a drug addict and ward of the state.
