After her betrothed dies, Effie Fuller and her two sisters are left penniless, homeless, and alone. Family friend Mr Pavelkar offers salvation, but at the cost of Effie finding an advantageous marriage to compensate for Mr Pavelkar’s industrial roots. It would position Effie as a fortune hunter in society, which is bad enough, but it also means she must disappoint her chronically disappointed dead father one last time, by looking “above” his dynasty.
